The brand
Martinelli Luce
Pipistrello Large with bulb is the version of Gae Aulenti’s table lamp, designed in 1965 and produced by Martinelli Luce, that runs on an included LED bulb. The bat-wing opal methacrylate diffuser is the original one, and it comes in three glossy finishes: white, black and green.
Why it became a classic
Gae Aulenti, one of the most influential architects and designers of 20th-century Italy, who also designed the interiors of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, created a lamp that sits halfway between furniture and functional light. The diffuser spreads a soft, broad light suited to dining tables, desks, consoles and living-room corners.
Finishes and versions
- Glossy white: sits naturally in any style.
- Glossy black: more graphic, suited to contemporary and darker interiors.
- Verde gave (green): a solid colour that becomes an accent in a living room or study.
- Size: Ø 56 cm, height from 70 to 86 cm, 8.8 kg.
- Alternatives: Pipistrello Large with integrated LED module, the limited-edition POP and the Pipistrello Small.
