Lui 5/S by Fratelli Boffi is a designer wooden armchair with a Vienna straw seat, designed by Philippe Bestenheider in 2009. It reinterprets a classic early twentieth-century chair in a futurist key: traditional crafting techniques are faithfully revived, while the soft, curved shapes of the original model give way to simplified lines and crystallised forms.

The pentagon as a unit of measurement

The pentagonal shape becomes the unit of measurement for the structure and is insistently repeated, from the cross-section of the legs to the panels that make up the seat, backrest and armrests. The Lui collection reinterprets early twentieth-century European design with geometric shapes and simplified lines, with an almost futurist character. Philippe Bestenheider, born in Sion in 1971, graduated in Architecture from ETH Zurich and earned a master’s degree in Industrial Design at the Domus Academy in Milan; his style combines Italian creativity with Swiss rigour. Fratelli Boffi was founded in 1928 in Lentate sul Seveso, in Brianza, from the cabinetmaking and carving tradition started by Luigi Boffi in the early twentieth century, and reinterprets classic style with irony and eclecticism.
